Know when a note is not enough
A forecast, a sail photo or a rig setting cannot certify a boat for a voyage. Check current local weather, sea state, navigation notices, the boat manual and the limits of the crew. A qualified rigger or sailmaker should inspect structural or load-bearing concerns.
Reduce the plan early
Reefing and sail changes are easier when practiced in daylight and moderate conditions. Keep lines, battens, slides and corner hardware secured, and stop when a system becomes hard to control. The Fieldbook never treats a generic wind band as permission to carry a particular sail.
Learning is the goal
Use the notes to improve observation, maintenance and questions. Read the offshore handling note and check sail wear before a demanding passage.
