What to look for in road running shoes
Asphalt is unforgiving. It returns almost none of the energy a runner puts into each step, so the shoe has to manage that load itself. Three things matter: the midsole foam, the drop (heel-to-toe height difference) and the fit through the heel.
Midsole foams fall into broad families. EVA-based foams are the long-standing standard, durable and predictable, with a firmer ride. Sizing is not a number, it is a measurement. Feet change with load, temperature and time of day, and left and right rarely match.
Measure both feet, standing, heel to wall, late in the day. Use the longer foot. Add 8 to 12 mm of clearance in front of the longest toe for running shoes, less for football boots, where a close fit is wanted but not a cramped one.
Width matters as much as length. Many brands offer narrow, standard and wide lasts, and a shoe that is right in length can still be wrong in width. Pronation, the inward roll of the foot after landing, is a gait characteristic, not a fault. Some runners do well with a neutral shoe, others with mild support. Mesh is light and breathable, and it drains and dries quickly. It is less resistant to abrasion and to thorns, so it suits road and light trail use more than rough rock.
Synthetic uppers, including coated fabrics and knits, sit between the two. They shed water and clean easily, but some coatings degrade with harsh detergents.
Common rules apply to all three. Never machine wash sport shoes. Never tumble dry them, because heat deforms the midsole foam and the glue. Remove insoles and laces to dry the inside. For odours, dry the shoe fully, then use a mild disinfectant or a removable insole that can be washed. Rotate pairs so each dries completely between uses.
Outsoles wear predictably. Smooth, flattened lugs on a trail shoe mean lost grip on mud. Worn-through heel rubber on a road shoe changes the landing angle. Replacing a shoe at that point is cheaper than treating the injury that follows.
