SHORT ANSWER

A field almanac works when it separates three things: the brush country that holds doves and bobwhites, the Nushagak drainage and Bristol Bay that carry five species of Pacific salmon, and the desk method that keeps records, sources, and corrections in order. Each has its own calendar, its own counts, and its own way of being read.

Opening dates for doves in this region are set in late summer and split the state into zones, because the migration timing differs from the coastal bend to the Edwards Plateau. Hunters who keep their own notes on flight lines, water use, and first covey calls build a local record that no statewide count can replace. The same discipline of dated, located observation runs through the brush and bay almanac, where flight lines, covey cover, and water points are logged against rainfall and nesting.

What does the brush country hold for doves and bobwhites?

The brush country of south Texas is a mosaic of thornscrub, mesquite, and open ground, and the two birds that define it are the mourning dove and the northern bobwhite. Doves move on flight lines, the repeated routes between roost, feed, and water that hunters learn to read across a season. Bobwhites hold tighter, in covey cover that changes with grass height, forb growth, and the shade line through the day.

Water is the hinge. In dry country, stock tanks and windmill overflow points concentrate birds, and a line of doves trading to water at last light tells more about the local population than any single field count. Rain resets everything. A wet spring pushes nesting earlier and spreads birds out; a dry one compresses them onto fewer water points and makes the flight lines sharper and easier to pattern.

Roadside counts are the standard index for both species in this country. Observers run fixed routes at fixed times, record every bird seen, and compare the totals year over year. The method does not give an absolute population. It gives a trend, and the trend is what opening dates and bag limits are argued from. Quail abundance in particular swings on a multi-year cycle tied to rainfall, so a single good count means little without the counts on either side of it.

Cover management follows the same logic. Bobwhites need nesting cover, brood cover, and escape cover within a short radius, and the three are not the same vegetation. Doves need seed on the ground and grit nearby. A field that is grazed to a uniform height serves neither. The working pattern is a rotation that leaves blocks of taller grass standing through the nesting window while keeping enough bare ground for feeding.

How are Nushagak and Bristol Bay salmon counted?

The Nushagak drainage feeds Bristol Bay from the north, and its runs are dominated by sockeye, with chum, coho, pink, and chinook filling out the five species of Pacific salmon present in the bay system. The counting is not done by eye. A sonar installation on the Nushagak River returns an estimate of fish passing a fixed cross-section, and that estimate is what the in-season management decisions rest on.

Sonar counting has limits that matter to anyone reading the numbers. The estimate depends on target strength, on the proportion of the run passing within the beam, and on how the species are separated. Sockeye dominate the passage in the peak weeks, which simplifies the split; in the shoulders of the run, chum and chinook mix in and the species apportionment becomes a judgment call. The daily count is therefore an index, revised as the season fills in, not a census.

Run timing is the other half. Sockeye enter the bay and push up the rivers on a schedule that shifts with water temperature, tide, and the strength of the year class. The peak of the Nushagak sockeye return falls in late June and early July in most years, and the commercial openings are set to take surplus above the escapement goal while leaving enough fish on the gravel. Escapement is counted separately, at weirs and towers upstream, and the two numbers, passage and escapement, are read together.

Tides and currents govern how the fish move once they are inside Bristol Bay. A flooding tide pushes fish toward the river mouths; an ebbing tide can hold them offshore or pull them along the beach. Fishermen working set nets and drift nets read the tide table the way a hunter reads a flight line, because the window is short and the difference between a set that fishes and one that does not is often a matter of an hour on either side of the change.

Mid-season management is a running negotiation between the sonar count, the escapement count, the test fishery, and the processors' capacity. When the count runs ahead of forecast, fishing time is added; when it lags, periods are cut. The regulation is published in the emergency orders, and the orders are the document a fisherman actually needs, not the pre-season forecast.

What does the desk method require?

An almanac is only as good as its desk routine. The working rules are few and strict. Every claim carries a source document, dated and identified. Every figure carries the date it was taken and the method that produced it. Every correction is logged rather than quietly overwritten, so a reader can see what changed and why.

The reading notebook is the core of it. Entries are made in the order the documents are read, with the page or section noted, and a short line on what the document supports. When a later document contradicts an earlier one, both stay in the notebook and the contradiction is flagged. This is what keeps a season's worth of counts, orders, and reports from collapsing into a single undated number.

Source documents fall into a few classes: agency counts and escapement reports, emergency orders and regulation booklets, weather and tide records, and the observer's own field notes. The field notes are the weakest class and the most useful, because they carry what the official record leaves out, the time of the flight, the state of the cover, the color of the water. They are also the class most likely to be wrong, which is why they are dated and located without exception.

Correction tracking is the discipline that separates a working almanac from a scrapbook. When a count is revised, the revision is entered with its date and the reason, and the earlier entry is marked as superseded rather than deleted. A reader who returns to the page a year later sees the history of the number, not just its latest value. That history is often the more useful part, because it shows how far the in-season estimates moved before they settled.

Why keep three separate calendars?

Bristol Bay work is keyed to run timing, sonar passage, escapement, and the tide. Desk work is keyed to the publication schedule of the documents, which is slower and more regular than either.

Keeping them separate also keeps the methods honest. A roadside count and a sonar count are both indices, but they are indices of different things, and a note that treats them as the same kind of number will mislead whoever reads it next. The same applies to a flight line and a tide line: both are patterns in time, and neither is a population.

How should a reader use an almanac page?

Read the date first. A count without a date is not a count. Read the method second, because a sonar estimate and a weir count carry different uncertainty. Read the correction history third, if there is one, because the revisions tell you how much the number moved before it was published.

Then read it against your own ground. A flight line recorded in one county may not repeat in the next, and a run timing recorded in one year may shift by two weeks in another. The almanac gives the pattern and the method; the local record is the reader's to build, dated and located, season after season.
