Give every control a specific question
The mainsheet changes more than the angle of the boom because its downward component can also influence leech tension. The traveler lets the crew alter the boom's lateral position while changing sheet tension less dramatically. Their exact interaction depends on geometry, but the diagnostic question is consistent: are you trying to change angle of attack, leech tension or both? Mark the starting traveler position and sheet load, then watch upper and lower telltales rather than naming the adjustment a success by feel alone.
The vang, or kicker, becomes especially important as the boom moves away from the centerline and the sheet pulls less downward. It can restrain boom rise and alter twist, but it also increases loads in its attachments and the boom. Use only the range and hardware arrangement intended for the rig. A difficult control, distorted fitting or unexplained boom movement is not a reason to pull harder. Ease the sail, inspect the system and consult its manual.
Use luff and foot controls to refine shape
Outhaul changes the lower part of the sail by controlling foot tension and depth near the boom. Cunningham or halyard tension changes luff tension and can influence where draft appears. These are refinements, not cures for every wrinkle. A crease can come from reefing geometry, mast bend, a stretched sail, a misplaced slide or insufficient tension elsewhere. Observe the full sail from a consistent position and compare both tacks before deciding which control explains it.
Control labels also hide rig differences. A loose-footed sail and one attached along the boom do not present the same visual cues. A full-batten main, a soft sail and a furling main can respond differently. Backstay adjustment may influence mast bend on some rigs and be irrelevant or restricted on others. Keep the boat or class instructions beside the trim note, and never force a control beyond its marked or documented operating range.
Run a useful trim experiment
Choose a clear stretch of water, a steady point of sail and manageable conditions. Record wind band, sea state, sail plan, heading, baseline marks, heel and helm feel. Change one control by a visible, reversible amount, allow the boat to settle, then record draft, twist, telltales and steering response. Return to the baseline before testing a second variable. The purpose is not to manufacture a speed claim; it is to connect one control with one observable response on this boat.
Gust response belongs in the same log. Note which control can be eased promptly, how the sail recovers and whether the crew can repeat the action without confusion. If trim changes stop producing a stable shape, inspect the sail and rig rather than stacking more tension. A stretched leech, distorted luff, loose fitting or incorrect mast tune can imitate a trim problem. A clear record lets a sailmaker distinguish a control question from a material or geometry question.

Ease before you force a control
A seized line, overloaded fitting, damaged sail or unstable boat is not a trim puzzle. Reduce load and inspect. Manufacturer limits, class rules and the actual rig arrangement take priority over any general description of traveler, vang, outhaul, sheet or luff tension.
